Barry O. Ochs, Ph.D., 74, passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2011 in the
Chambersburg Hospital after battling a brief period with cancer.
Born on October 10, 1937 in Reading, PA, he was the son of late Aaron D. and Mildred
E. Ochs.
A 1955 graduate of Muhlenberg High, Barry earned his Bachelors of Science from
Albright College in 1959. From there he was awarded a federal research grant for work
at Purdue University, Lafayette, IN for six years while earning a Master’s degree and
Ph.D. in biochemistry. Desiring to be a teacher and be near family, he chose to come to
Shippensburg University in 1965 as a Professor of Bio/Chemistry.
Barry was a beloved “Dad”, a dedicated teacher, and care-giver for animals.
He is survived by a daughter, Karen Woodard and her husband Jim, two
grandchildren, Kailyn and Cameron all of Wilton, NY; and his ex-wife, Judith S. Ochs of
Chambersburg, PA. Also surviving are his sister, Madelyn Stotz and her husband Harold,
and their daughters Lorie Spadafora, and her husband Dave, and children Brianna, Alexa
and Jon; Stacey Dotterer, and her husband Tim, and children Clinton and Courtney;
and Mandy Kieffer, and her husband Jim, and son Joe; and Barry’s brother, Brian, and
his wife Linda, and children Katie, Kevin, Bryan and Brad, and grandchildren Xavier,
Ariannah, Ayden, and Aylah.

A private burial service will be held on April 13 at the Laureldale Cemetery, Reading,
PA.
