Shelter volunteer, Cindy Hull, handed Suzie over for bonding and inspection, and later Dennis Bumbaugh appeared with Shadow, a little brown male Papillon dog. Suzie was chosen for adoption because she had the same markings as our deceased dog, ” Jicky” who was born in Soule, Korea and died in West Virginia.
Our little dog Suzie proved to be such a treasure, and a good dog, that two months later when Shadow (AKA Pappy) appeared on PetFinder.com as an 8-year old Papilion with a cataract, we knew he was meant for us. He was Cindy's other baby, the one she often spoke of on the radio.
Despite his eye problem our vet told us that Pappy is a very healthy 8-year old who can look forward to at least eight more good years. Pappy is a mellow little guy, cute, cuddly, crafty, and so loveable. Pappy’s teeth were cleaned at the vet and he did not need any extractions. Today, Pappy is a handsome little fellow with silky fur. He has gained weight, his eyes are clear, and his fur is bright and a deeper color. Pappy is currently receiving an eye drop treatment which seems to be working. He looks much younger now that his eyes are looking brighter and healthier.
Currently, our little “Susie Sunshine” and “Happy Pappy” are enjoying life to its fullest and they are attending puppy kindergarten. Suzie excels in on-line leash walking, thanks to the shelter volunteers who helped her during her residence at BDAL.
When happy Pappy emerged from his shock syndrome he began to boss Suzie, thus, placing her fourth in the family pack order. How could he do that to her? She is the one who treated him like a new puppy and licks him all over when he is anxious! Suzie always had her special secret place, on a cushion behind the sofa, but Pappy now invades it. Today, Suzie choses to sit on top of the sofa and spins her tail like a propeller. She also knows how to wag her tail, left to right, like a normal dog.
Suzie loves to hear the birds sing, especially when she and the Ma take their morning walks together. The rest of the day, she also loves to trot in and out of the patio door and onto the deck to listen to the birds sing and have a quick sun bath. (Supervised).
Pappy is a dancing dog, especially when treats are available. During his shock syndrome period, Pappy made his first communication with “woo woo woo” sounds to which he received an answer “woo woo woo.” We still talk this way and it's really cute.
Pappy's shock period did not last long whereas Suzie's lasted eight days without her uttering a sound. Even when the vet gave Suzie a blood test there was no sound from her, then on day eight at 1.30 am she woke everyone up with loud howl; she called her pack, she was home at last.
Our 13-year-old fearless cat, who Suzie thought was a dog, caused her to have a front paws boxing match with him. It ended peacefully and nobody was hurt, thus ending Suzie's boxing career. The cat had a cushion next to the patio door which Suzie now sits on; was this her winning prize?
